EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment of the Return of the ashes of Napoleon I to Paris on 15 December 1840. The color lithograph by Eugene Charles Francois Guerard depicts a scene filled with grandeur and emotion. In this image, we see a bustling city street in Paris adorned with flags and decorations, as crowds gather to witness this significant event. Soldiers march proudly in their uniforms, creating an atmosphere of military honor and reverence. The Hotel des Invalides stands tall in the background, serving as a poignant symbol of Napoleon's legacy. The procession itself is awe-inspiring, with people lining the streets to catch a glimpse of history unfolding before their eyes. As Napoleon Bonaparte's mortal remains are brought back from St Helena, where he had been exiled after his defeat at Waterloo, there is a sense of solemnity mixed with pride among the Parisians. The Retour des cendres was not only an act of remembrance but also a political move orchestrated by Adolphe Thiers and King Louis-Philippe to consolidate their power through associating themselves with France's legendary leader. This print serves as a powerful reminder of Napoleon's impact on French history and his enduring legacy. It encapsulates both the admiration for his military achievements and the complex emotions surrounding his controversial reign.
