EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts William Hamilton, the 2nd Duke of Hamilton, a prominent Scottish nobleman who lived during the 17th century. The portrait showcases his dignified and regal presence, capturing his essence as a man who supported both Royalist and Presbyterian causes. Created by Robert Dunkarton in 1814, this mezzotint engraving beautifully translates a pencil drawing by Samuel Cooper into an exquisite work of art. It is part of Richard Earlom and Charles Turner's collection titled "Portraits of Characters Illustrious in British History Engraved in Mezzotinto" published by S. Woodburn in London in 1815. Hamilton's life was tragically cut short at the Battle of Worcester in 1651 when he was killed while fighting for his beliefs. His legacy lives on through this remarkable print, which allows us to glimpse into the past and appreciate the rich history of Scotland. The image is housed within a private collection but has been made accessible to viewers through Florilegius' Fine Art Finder platform. As we admire this piece, let us remember not only its artistic value but also its historical significance as it represents an important figure from Scottish culture and British history.
