EDITORS COMMENTS
This framed color drawing on grey paper captures the innocence and bravery of John Andrewes, a young boy dressed in a sailor's outfit. Created by James Sharples in 1790, this pastel portrait showcases John with one hand tucked into his waistcoat, exuding confidence beyond his years. The background features a sketch of a ship at sea, symbolizing his future adventures. John Andrewes was the youngest son of Thomas Andrewes, the Comptroller of Customs for the Port of Bristol, and Mary Clarke. His destiny led him to embark on a seafaring career in 1795 when he joined the navy as a Midshipman. Over time, he climbed through the ranks and became a Lieutenant in 1802. Tragically, John's life was cut short while displaying immense courage during an encounter with a French privateer off the coast of Cork, Ireland. In November 1809, he lost his life during boarding action. This poignant portrait serves as both an homage to John's youthful spirit and an everlasting tribute to his sacrifice. It is part of Bristol Museum and Art Gallery's collection in the United Kingdom. The artist beautifully captured not only John Andrewes' physical appearance but also hints at his adventurous spirit through subtle details like the ship in the background. This artwork stands as a testament to both personal loss and historical significance within maritime history.
