The eared breakfront breccia rosso e giallo marble top above a partially gadrooned cornice and a shaped frieze drawer centred by a foliate and Vitruvian-scroll panel flanked by floral paterae and mounted with fruiting laurel swags, above a panelled door depicting a Chinoiserie landscape and with leaf-cast border, flanked by further landscape panels, the sides decorated similarly, the canted angles headed by bearded bacchic masks and terminating in bracket feet mounted with foliate paterae, stamped twice BVRB, four times JME and twice M, the lacquer with some vernis martin overdecoration applied when the panels were cut for this commode, the marble top possibly Italian and earlier and shaped to fit the commode at time of construction.); Photo eChristies Images; French, out of copyright

Attributed to either Bernard II or Bernard III Van Risenburgh from the 18th century French School, this commode features remarkable craftsmanship. The eared breakfront breccia rosso e giallo marble top adds elegance to the design, complemented by a partially gadrooned cornice and shaped frieze drawer. The focal point of this commode is its panelled door depicting a Chinoiserie landscape, surrounded by leaf-cast borders and flanked by additional landscape panels on each side. The canted angles are adorned with bearded bacchic masks that add character to the piece while terminating in bracket feet mounted with foliate paterae. Stamped twice BVRB (Bernard Van Risenburgh), four times JME (Jurande des Menuisiers Ebénistes), and twice M (unknown mark), this commode bears witness to its prestigious origins.
