EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic print captures the momentous occasion of the signing of the Lateran Agreements between the Italian government and the Holy Vatican Siege. The agreements, also known as Patti lateranensi, were signed on February 11,1929, at the Lateran Palace in Rome. Cardinal Pietro Gasparri represented Pope Pius XI during this significant event. The Lateran Agreements guaranteed the sovereignty of the Pope within Vatican City and formalized Catholicism as Italy's official religion. This treaty settled what was known as "the Roman Question" a long-standing dispute between Italy and the Holy See regarding their respective roles and territories. In this illustration by Tancredi Scarpelli from Paolo Giudici's "Storia d'Italia" (History of Italy), we see Cardinal Pietro Gasparri engaging with Benito Mussolini, commonly referred to as Il Duce. Mussolini served as Prime Minister of Italy at that time and played a crucial role in negotiating these agreements. The signing of these pacts marked a significant turning point for both church-state relations in Italy and for global politics during that era. It solidified diplomatic ties between Fascist Italy under Mussolini's leadership and one of Christianity's most influential institutions – The Holy Vatican Siege. This image serves as a reminder of an important historical milestone that shaped religious freedom, political alliances, and cultural identity in both Italy and beyond.
