EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures the esteemed figure of His Excellency General Sir Colin Campbell GCB, Commander in Chief, in the East Indies in 1857. This lithograph by Charles Baugniet showcases the distinguished military leader who played a crucial role during the Indian Mutiny. Born into humble beginnings as the son of a Glasgow carpenter, Campbell's ascent to high command was gradual but remarkable. It was his exceptional leadership during the Crimean War that brought him into public consciousness and solidified his reputation. When news of the Indian Mutiny reached Britain, Prime Minister Lord Palmerston wasted no time in appointing Campbell as Commander-in-Chief in India. Arriving in Calcutta in August 1857, Campbell swiftly organized his army and successfully cleared Lower Bengal of rebels. In November of that year, he orchestrated the second relief of Lucknow before returning to capture the city himself in March 1858. Such triumphs led to his elevation to peerage later that year. Upon returning to Britain, Campbell received a well-deserved promotion to field marshal for his outstanding contributions. This image serves as a testament not only to Campbell's remarkable career but also highlights an important chapter in British colonial history. Displayed at London's National Army Museum, this lithograph provides viewers with a glimpse into an era defined by military prowess and imperial ambitions. The photograph is a poignant reminder of General Sir Colin Campbell's indelible mark on both British military history and India's struggle for independence during turbulent times.
