He joined the Prussian cuirassiers as a cornet (standard-bearer), and at the end of the Second Silesian War he was in command of 15 squadrons of Hussars with the rank of major. In 1756 he fought in the Seven Years War with the rank of colonel, earning the decoration Pour le merite, the Order of the Black Eagle and the rank of Lieutenant General, being seriously wounded several times.
