EDITORS COMMENTS
Vue de la Nouvelle Yorck, 1776 circa (engraving, coloured) by Balthasar Friedrich Leizelt captures the bustling waterfront of New York City during the American War of Independence. This French print provides a vivid depiction of the city's vibrant activity and maritime importance during this pivotal period in history. In 1776, General George Washington commanded American forces defending New York against British troops. However, on 27 August of that year, the Americans suffered a significant defeat at Brooklyn Heights. The demoralized American army faced further challenges as British forces landed near New York and swiftly occupied the town on 15 September. Despite these setbacks, Washington managed to withdraw most of his army intact. The print showcases not only the physical landscape but also serves as a visual representation of the struggles faced by both sides during this tumultuous time. The artist's use of color adds depth and richness to this engraving, bringing to life the various ships and boats dotting the harbor. It offers viewers a glimpse into daily life along New York City's waterfront while highlighting its strategic significance in shaping America's fight for independence. Preserved at London's National Army Museum, this print is an invaluable historical artifact that allows us to connect with our past and appreciate how far we have come.
