7342020 Study of a dog wearing collar and of tree branches, 19th century (graphite) by Schetky, John Christian (1778-1874); 18.1x28.4 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: John Christian Schetky
Mounted in album with PAH3772-PAH3787, PAH3789-PAH3801. No. 17 of 30
The dog depicted in this undated sheet of studies is probably Schetky's dog, Peter. Schetky's daughter, SFL Schetky, recounts that 'the summer of 1819 brought the artist great sorrow in the death of his faithful old dog, Peter. It was to him the severance of many an old tie, the loss of an inseparable companion; for through the many changes of eighteen years the master and servant had never been parted, and the loving intelligence of the latter had become interwoven with every pursuit and interest of the former.'); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century graphite drawing by John Christian Schetky captures the essence of a loyal companion in his study of a dog wearing a collar. The intricate details and delicate shading bring to life the artist's beloved pet, Peter, who was an inseparable part of Schetky's life for eighteen years. As Schetky's daughter recounts, the summer of 1819 marked a period of great sorrow with the passing of Peter, signaling the end of an era filled with cherished memories and unwavering loyalty.
In addition to the poignant portrayal of man's best friend, this artwork also features meticulous studies of tree branches that add depth and texture to the composition.
