Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers. Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant and captivating print titled "The Jordan Valley, from the series Buy Jaffa Oranges" takes us on a visual journey through time. Created by Frank Newbould in 1930, this colour lithograph was commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board (EMB) to promote sales of Empire-grown goods across Great Britain and its colonies. Displayed at Manchester Art Gallery in the UK, this artwork is part of a remarkable collection of artist-designed posters acquired by the gallery in the 1930s. These posters were intended to make Britons more conscious consumers of products from their own empire. "The Jordan Valley" poster showcases an idyllic scene with lush orange groves stretching as far as the eye can see. The vivid colors transport viewers into a world brimming with abundance and natural beauty. However, it is important to acknowledge that these images also reflect uncomfortable beliefs associated with British colonialism. Today, this artwork invites contemplation about the legacies left behind by empires and raises thought-provoking questions about our relationship with history. It serves as a reminder that art not only captures moments in time but also holds within it complex narratives that shape our understanding of society. As we admire this stunning piece, let us appreciate its artistic merit while acknowledging its historical context and encouraging dialogue around issues such as imperialism and cultural heritage.
