EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print of the "Battle of Somosierra, November 30th 1808" by Louis Lejeune takes us back to a significant moment in history. This oil on canvas masterpiece, measuring an impressive 210x262 cm, is housed at the Château de Versailles in France. The artwork depicts a crucial event during the Peninsular War, where Napoleon I's French army triumphed over a heavily outnumbered Spanish detachment under Benito de San Juan. The battle took place at the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain pass, located just 60 miles north of Madrid. In this intense scene captured by Lejeune's brushstrokes, we witness Polish cavalry fighting valiantly alongside their French counterparts. The Spanish troops put up a fierce resistance but were ultimately overwhelmed by Napoleon's forces. As French infantry advances up the slopes towards victory, sorrow and despair fill the air as fallen soldiers lie dead or dying on the battlefield. This decisive triumph removed the last obstacle to capturing Madrid for Napoleon's army. Several days after this battle at Somosierra, Madrid fell into French hands. Lejeune's painting not only commemorates this historic clash between two nations but also serves as a testament to bravery and sacrifice exhibited by soldiers from both sides. It stands as a reminder of Europe's turbulent past and highlights how war can bring about both glory and tragedy simultaneously.
