EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the breathtaking view from Shergai Heights towards Ali Musjid in 1878. Taken by John Burke during the 2nd Afghan War, this image showcases the entire line of enemy defenses on either side of Ali Musjid, as well as the camp of the 3rd Brigade. The Shargai Heights, located in the Khyber Pass, played a significant role in British military strategy during this time. Lieutenant-General Sir Samuel Browne's Peshawar Valley Field Force successfully captured these heights on November 21st, marking a crucial victory for British control over the Khyber Pass. As it defended one of its narrowest points, occupying Shargai Heights was essential to secure their position. Under Brigadier-General Frederick Appleyard's command, the 3rd Infantry Brigade can be seen stationed at their camp in this photograph. Their presence further emphasizes the importance placed on securing this strategic location. This image is part of an album containing a hundred photographs taken by John Burke around 1878. Preserved by the National Army Museum in London and made available through Bridgeman Images' collection, it offers us a glimpse into history and reminds us of both the challenges faced and victories achieved during this period of conflict.
