EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an Indian Army officer's frock coat from around 1860. The fabric used for this exquisite garment is drab melton cloth, making it a rare and early example of its kind. It is believed that this particular coat was privately purchased, most likely by a cavalry officer who desired a distinct uniform. During the 1840s, soldiers in India began adopting khaki uniforms as camouflage. However, these were not standard issue at the time. Instead, soldiers would stain their white summer uniforms with dust, coffee, tea, curry powder, and other dyes to achieve the desired khaki color. Some even went so far as to have custom-made khaki uniforms at their own expense. The significance of this frock coat lies in its historical context and evolution of military attire in India during the 19th century. It serves as a testament to the resourcefulness and adaptability of Indian Army officers who sought practical solutions for blending into their surroundings. Displayed at the National Army Museum in London, this print captures not only the craftsmanship and elegance of Indian military fashion but also sheds light on how soldiers creatively adapted their clothing to suit their needs on the battlefield. A true treasure from our past that reminds us of both ingenuity and sacrifice within our armed forces.
