Jamrud is located at the entrance to the Khyber Pass, about 10 miles (17 km) from Peshawar. Lieutenant-General Sir Samuel BrowneAs Peshawar Valley Field Force set out from Jamrud to force the pass and capture the Afghan fortress of Ali Masjid before advancing on to Jalalabad. Villages like Kadm were inhabited by the Afridi tribe who traditionally exercised the right of toll in the Khyber. Burke accompanied the Field Force as an unofficial photographer.
