5925039 Farriers of the 17th Regiment of (Light) Dragoons (Lancers), Chobham Camp, 1853 (oil on board) by Alken, Samuel (1750-1815); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Farriers of the 17th Lancers shoeing a horse from a mobile forge, Chobham Camp, 1853.
Oil on board by Samuel Henry Alken (1810-1894).
From 14 June to 25 August 10, 000 men, 1, 500 horses and 24 guns mustered on Chobham Common in Surrey for drill, field operations and parades, under the command of Lieutenant-General (later Field Marshal) John Colborne, First Baron Seaton (1778-1863). Known as the A Great CampA, Chobham was the scene of the first large-scale manoeuvres in Britain since the Napoleonic Wars. The object of the encampment was to improve the efficiency and discipline of the British Army, which had not seen active service in Europe in nearly forty years. These preparations proved invaluable in the Crimean War of 1854-1856.
This painting is the original for a coloured lithograph in the set of six prints by Vincent Brooks after Alken entitled A Chobham/ Reminiscences of the CampA, published by Messrs Preston, 31 Burlington Arcade, London, 1853 circa.); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in military history, showcasing the farriers of the 17th Regiment of (Light) Dragoons (Lancers) at Chobham Camp in 1853. Painted by Samuel Henry Alken, this oil on board artwork depicts the skilled farriers shoeing a horse from a mobile forge. The scene takes place during the Great Camp at Chobham Common in Surrey, where over 10,000 men, 1,500 horses, and 24 guns gathered for drills and field operations under Lieutenant-General John Colborne's command. This encampment aimed to enhance the efficiency and discipline of the British Army after decades without active service in Europe. Alken's painting served as the original piece for a set of six prints titled "Chobham: Reminiscences of the Camp" published by Messrs Preston in London circa 1853. The lithograph version was created by Vincent Brooks after Alken's work. These preparations proved invaluable when Britain entered into the Crimean War shortly after. By capturing this momentous event through his brushstrokes, Alken immortalizes not only these dedicated farriers but also an important chapter in military training and readiness. Now preserved at London's National Army Museum, this remarkable artwork continues to remind us of our past while honoring those who have played crucial roles in shaping our armed forces.
