The brig Mary is identified by her name on the white pennant flying from her mast. A second view showing the ship from the rear is shown alongside the main view. This arrangement followed a tradition that had become rather old-fashioned by this time. In 1826, James Mather of South Shields is said to have invented the first on-board lifeboat for the Mary, which was built by his father, a Newcastle shipbuilder. The artist John Scott was one of the North Easts best known painters of shipping scenes.); eTyne & Wear Archives & Museums; French, out of copyright

The Collier Brig Mary
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating oil painting by John Scott that captures the essence of maritime history. The focal point of the artwork is the eponymous brig, easily identifiable by its name displayed on a white pennant fluttering from its mast. In this piece, Scott showcases both a frontal and rear view of the ship, adhering to an old-fashioned tradition that was becoming less common during his time. The historical significance of "The Collier Brig Mary" extends beyond its artistic beauty. It commemorates James Mather's invention in 1826 - the first on-board lifeboat for the Mary. Constructed by Mather's father, a renowned Newcastle shipbuilder, this innovation revolutionized safety measures at sea. John Scott, hailed as one of Northeast England's most celebrated painters specializing in maritime scenes, expertly brings this momentous vessel to life through his brushstrokes. His attention to detail and mastery of capturing light and shadow create a sense of realism that transports viewers back in time. Displayed proudly at South Shields Museum & Art Gallery in South Shields, UK, this print serves as a testament to our rich seafaring heritage. As we gaze upon "The Collier Brig Mary" we are reminded not only of the artist's skill but also of the bravery and ingenuity exhibited by those who navigated treacherous waters aboard such vessels centuries ago.
