EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the "Hippodrome of the family of Constantine" on Via Nomentana in 1833. Created by Agostino Tofanelli, this etching with brown wash captures the essence of ancient Roman architecture and history. The image is part of a private collection and was engraved by Pietro Fontana. Contrary to its name, this site is not actually a hippodrome but rather the ruins of a large cemetery basilica believed to have been built after Constantine's death by his daughter, Constantia. It dates back to 337-50 and holds great historical significance. On the left side of the image stands Sant Agnese fuori le mura church, while on the right we see Santa Costanza church. The latter was likely constructed before 354 as a mausoleum for Constantia and her sister Helena. The intricate details captured in this print offer viewers an opportunity to immerse themselves in Rome's rich past. From architectural elements like columns and arches to remnants of ancient structures, every aspect tells a story about Roman civilization during that era. This particular artwork comes from "Recueil des vues au bister dessinees et lavees par Callimachus" which translates to "Collection of views drawn and washed with bistre by Callimachus". It forms part of The Stapleton Collection and is now available through Bridgeman Images for public enjoyment without any copyright restrictions or commercial use limitations.
