EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable artifact from the 19th century - a Riding whip, dating back to 1854. The exquisite craftsmanship of this leather and metal whip is believed to be of Turkish origin, possibly acquired by a British soldier during the Crimean War (1854-1856). Every detail of this riding whip tells a story. The wooden handle is meticulously plaited with silver wire, adorned with vibrant green lozenge-shaped beads at each intersection. Its butt is elegantly bound with scarlet velvet and features an intricately knotted suspension strap. Moving upwards, the top of the whip continues in similar fashion, joined by a flexible strip embellished with gold wire and beads. The highlight of this extraordinary piece lies at its end - a fringed red leather backed velvet triangular flap that adds an element of grandeur to its overall design. This stunning feature is further enhanced through delicate silver embroidery. Preserved within the National Army Museum in London, this riding whip not only represents skilled craftsmanship but also serves as a testament to the historical significance it holds within animal management practices during that era. Through this photograph, we are transported back in time to appreciate both the artistry and functionality behind such unique artifacts from our past.
