474015 The River Wall at Wylam Scars (w/c & ink on paper)
by Carmichael, John Wilson (1800-68); 18.2x12.2 cm; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK; (add.info.: This is one of the small and detailed pictures that Carmichael made for a series of engravings showing the Newcastle to Carlisle Railway (opened 1835-39). Many people are sitting on the roofs of the railway carriages as well as inside. The slatted trucks seem to be carrying hay. On the far side of the river is the winding gear of a coal mine, and a funnel-shaped kiln for firing glass or pottery. The picture is left uncoloured to make it easier for the printmaker to reproduce it;

EDITORS COMMENTS
The River Wall at Wylam Scars" is a captivating print that offers a glimpse into the bustling world of the Newcastle to Carlisle Railway in the 19th century. Created by John Wilson Carmichael, this small and intricately detailed artwork showcases his talent for capturing everyday scenes with precision. In this particular piece, we see numerous individuals perched on the roofs of railway carriages, as well as inside them. The slatted trucks carrying hay add a touch of authenticity to the composition. On the opposite side of the river, we catch sight of coal mine winding gear and a kiln used for firing glass or pottery. Carmichael intentionally left this picture uncoloured, allowing it to be easily reproduced by printmakers. This decision highlights his focus on meticulous line work and intricate details rather than vibrant hues. As we observe "The River Wall at Wylam Scars" we are transported back in time to an era when railways were transforming transportation and connecting communities. This artwork is part of Carmichael's series depicting various aspects of the Newcastle to Carlisle Railway's journey. It serves as both an artistic representation and historical documentation, offering us insight into life during that period. Displayed at Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK, this print continues to captivate viewers with its exquisite craftsmanship and ability to transport us back through time.
