EDITORS COMMENTS
Les Rois en Exil. Presentations Royales: Amis, tous amis!, c. 1906 (litho) captures a poignant moment in history through the medium of a postcard print. This satirical artwork by L. Chagny depicts three former royals from French colonies who were exiled to Algiers. On the left stands Behanzin, the King of Dahomey, known for his resistance against colonial rule. To the right is Queen Ranavalona of Madagascar, whose reign was marked by her fierce defense of Malagasy independence. In the center is King Ham Nghi of Vietnam, who fought against French colonization and was eventually forced into exile. The image portrays these monarchs bowing before each other in a gesture that suggests camaraderie and solidarity amidst their shared experiences as exiles. The use of satire adds depth to this portrayal, highlighting both their regal status and their displacement from power. This lithograph serves as a reminder of the complex dynamics between colonizers and colonized peoples during this period in history. It also sheds light on the resilience and strength displayed by these former royals in face of adversity. As we gaze upon this historical artifact, we are invited to reflect on themes such as colonialism, monarchy, national identity, and resistance movements that continue to shape our world today.
