Great Hypostyle Hall, Palace of Karnak, Thebes, 1852 (b / w photo)

1080216 Great Hypostyle Hall, Palace of Karnak, Thebes, 1852 (b/w photo) by Du Camp, Maxime (1822-94); 31.5x44.5 cm; New York Public Library, USA; (add.info.: The Karnak Temple Complex, commonly known as Karnak, comprises a vast mix of decayed temples, chapels, pylons, and other buildings. Building at the complex began during the reign of Senusret I in the Middle Kingdom and continued into the Ptolemaic period, although most of the extant buildings date from the New Kingdom. The area around Karnak was the ancient Egyptian Ipet-isut (" The Most Selected of Places" ) and the main place of worship of the eighteenth dynasty Theban Triad with the god Amun as its head. It is part of the monumental city of Thebes. The Karnak complex gives its name to the nearby, and partly surrounded, modern village of El-Karnak, 2.5 kilometres (1.6 miles) north of Luxor.); French, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic Great Hypostyle Hall in the Palace of Karnak, Thebes. Taken in 1852 by Maxime Du Camp, this image measures 31.5x44.5 cm and is housed at the New York Public Library in the USA. The Great Hypostyle Hall is a remarkable architectural masterpiece within the vast Karnak Temple Complex. This complex consists of a mix of ancient temples, chapels, pylons, and other structures that date back to various periods of Egyptian history. Most of the remaining buildings were constructed during the New Kingdom era. In ancient times, Karnak was known as Ipet-isut or "The Most Selected of Places". It served as a central place for worshiping Amun, who was considered the head deity of Theban Triad during Egypt's eighteenth dynasty. Located near modern-day Luxor, Karnak continues to be an awe-inspiring site that attracts visitors from around the world. Du Camp's photograph beautifully showcases the grandeur and intricate details found within this sandstone hall. Its towering columns create an atmosphere filled with mystery and wonder—a testament to human ingenuity and artistic skill throughout history. As we gaze upon this romantic ruin frozen in time through Du Camp's lens, we are reminded of our connection to ancient civilizations and their enduring legacy on our world today.
