Recruiting poster for the 7th (or The Queens Own) Regiment of (Light Dragoons), 1809

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print showcases a historic recruiting poster that once called upon brave souls to join the esteemed ranks of the 7th Regiment, also known as The Queens Own. Created by an unknown English artist in the 19th century, this color lithograph now resides in London's National Army Museum. The poster holds deep significance, representing a pivotal moment in history. It harkens back to Sir John Moore's Spanish campaign of 1808-1809, during which the regiment valiantly fought alongside their comrades. However, tragedy struck as they were forced into retreat and later evacuated from Corunna by sea. The toll was heavy on these courageous soldiers; many lives were lost during this arduous journey home. A troopship carrying them was tragically shipwrecked off Cornwall's treacherous coast, further claiming seventy more men. Upon returning to England after such devastating losses, it became imperative for The Queens Own Regiment to rebuild its strength. This recruitment drive sought new recruits who would fill the void left by fallen heroes and continue their legacy of bravery and dedication. As we gaze upon this remarkable image today, let us remember those who answered this call to arms with unwavering courage and honor. Their sacrifice is immortalized within this recruiting poster – a testament to their indomitable spirit and commitment to duty.
