The only son of the artist and his wife Vera, Yuri Ilyich Repin (1877-1954), was born in Chuguev. In this portrait, Yuri poses naturally, comfortably seated between the folds of a Turkmen carpet, arranged in her fathers studio for his painting Ivan the Terrible. Here, the painter details with equal attention the chubby face of the child, his jacket with gold buttons and his furry ankle boots. As an adult, Youri Repine pursued a career as a painter, without however achieving the notoriety of her father.); Photo © Sylvain Collet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a detailed close-up of Yuri Repin as a child, painted by his renowned father Ilya Efimovich Repin in 1882. The young boy, born in Chuguev and the only son of the artist and his wife Vera, exudes naturalness and comfort as he sits between the folds of a Turkmen carpet in his father's studio. This particular setting was arranged for Ilya's famous painting "Ivan the Terrible". Every aspect of Yuri's chubby face, from his rosy cheeks to his innocent gaze, is meticulously depicted by the painter. His jacket with gold buttons and furry ankle boots further accentuate this charming portrait. Although Yuri Repin pursued a career as an artist himself, he never achieved the same level of fame as his father. Nevertheless, this photograph allows us to glimpse into the early years of an individual who would later contribute to the world of art. The image showcases not only 19th-century Russian art but also offers insights into costume design during that era. It highlights childhood innocence and youthfulness while providing glimpses into Russian-Asian cultural influences through elements such as Turkmen carpets. The direct eye contact captured in this portrait adds depth and connection between viewer and subject. Overall, this print serves as both a historical document capturing late 19th-century aesthetics and an intimate portrayal of one family's artistic legacy.
