LADY PLAYING WITH HER UMBRELLA, 1874 (oil on canvas, mounted on cardboard)
7215246 LADY PLAYING WITH HER UMBRELLA, 1874 (oil on canvas, mounted on cardboard) by Repin, Ilya Efimovich (1844-1930); Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, Russia; (add.info.: (sketch for Le Cafe Parisien)
1874//Oil on canvas mounted on cardboard
In Paris, Repine produced a large painting, Le Cafe Parisien (1874-1875, Moscow, Museum of Avant-garde Art), for which he multiplied his drawings and preparatory studies. In this sketch, Repine shows her interest in the fashion of elegant Parisian women. The definitive painting was presented for the first time at the 1875 Salon in Paris, where the work went unnoticed by the press and the public. The St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts, which has been strictly prohibiting its students from exhibiting abroad since the Itinerant Revolt, is, however, very dissatisfied with Repins initiative.); Photo © Sylvain Collet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Ilya Efimovich Repin's "Lady Playing with Her Umbrella" painting, created in 1874. The original artwork, an oil on canvas mounted on cardboard, is housed in the prestigious Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, Russia. Repin's sketch for "Le Cafe Parisien" a larger painting he produced during his time in Paris, reveals his fascination with the fashion of elegant Parisian women. The definitive version of the painting was first exhibited at the 1875 Salon in Paris but unfortunately went unnoticed by both critics and the public. Interestingly, Repin's initiative to exhibit abroad displeased the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts due to their strict prohibition against such actions since the Itinerant Revolt. The print captures a moment frozen in time—a lady gracefully playing with her umbrella amidst bustling streets of late 19th-century France. With its delicate brushstrokes and attention to detail, this piece exemplifies Repin's mastery as an artist. From her attire to her demeanor, this portrait exudes elegance and femininity. The lady stands as a symbol of youth and sophistication against a backdrop that represents European culture at its finest. Bridgeman Images has beautifully captured this iconic artwork through their lens, allowing art enthusiasts worldwide to appreciate Repin's talent and immerse themselves in the rich history it represents.
