Prince Arthur (1850-1942) was the third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He was named after one of his godfathers, Field Marshal Arthur, 1st Duke of Wellington, on whose 81st birthday he was born.
In 1879, Arthur married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia. She was the daughter of Prince Friedrich Karl and a great-niece of Kaiser Wilhelm I (another of Arthurs godfathers). To mark the occasion, he was appointed colonel of the 3rd Zieten Hussars, a regiment of the Imperial German Army. From 1904, he served as its colonel-in-chief and in 1906 he was appointed a field marshal in the German Army.
Although purely ceremonial, these appointments reflected his familyAs close German ties. His mother, Queen Victoria, was the last British monarch from the House of Hanover. Through Prince ArthurAs father, Prince Albert, he was also Duke of Saxony and Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.); eNational Army Museum; German, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a tunic worn by HRH The Duke of Connaught, who served in the 3rd Zieten Hussars of the German Army before 1914. The tunic, preserved at the National Army Museum in London, is a testament to Prince Arthur's remarkable military career and his close ties with Germany. Prince Arthur, born in 1850 as the third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, was named after Field Marshal Arthur, 1st Duke of Wellington. In 1879, he married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia, further solidifying his connection to Germany. As a mark of this union and celebration of their marriage, he was appointed colonel of the prestigious 3rd Zieten Hussars regiment. The significance behind these appointments goes beyond mere ceremony; they reflect Prince Arthur's deep familial connections to both Britain and Germany. His mother Queen Victoria hailed from the House of Hanover while his father held titles such as Duke of Saxony and Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. This print not only captures an exquisite piece from history but also serves as a reminder that royal families often transcend borders through their marriages and alliances. It offers us a glimpse into an era where diplomacy played out on both political stages and within personal relationships between nations' leaders.
