Both officers and men of hussar regiments wore the pelisse, or over jacket, which reflected the Hungarian origins of the hussars style of dress.
Prince Arthur (1850-1942) was the third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He was named after one of his godfathers, Field Marshal Arthur, 1st Duke of Wellington, on whose 81st birthday he was born.
In 1879, Arthur married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia. She was the daughter of Prince Friedrich Karl and a great-niece of Kaiser Wilhelm I (another of Arthurs godfathers). To mark the occasion, he was appointed colonel of the 3rd Zieten Hussars, a regiment of the Imperial German Army. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning pelisse worn by HRH The Duke of Connaught, pre-1914. The pelisse, or over jacket, was an essential part of the hussar regiments' attire and reflected the Hungarian origins of their distinctive dress style. Prince Arthur, also known as HRH The Duke of Connaught, was the third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Born on the 81st birthday of Field Marshal Arthur, 1st Duke of Wellington (one of his godfathers), he inherited a strong military legacy. In 1879, Prince Arthur married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia, further strengthening his ties to Germany. To commemorate this union, he was appointed colonel of the prestigious 3rd Zieten Hussars regiment in the Imperial German Army. His connection to Germany deepened when he became its colonel-in-chief in 1904 and later received an appointment as field marshal in the German Army in 1906. Although these appointments were purely ceremonial in nature, they symbolized Prince Arthur's close familial bonds with Germany. As Queen Victoria's last British monarch from the House of Hanover and through his father Prince Albert's titles as Duke of Saxony and Prince Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, his family had significant connections to both Britain and Germany. This remarkable photograph captures not only a beautiful piece from history but also highlights HRH The Duke Of Connaught's fascinating personal story within a complex era marked by shifting alliances between nations.
