EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph, titled "Huntsmen with gazelle, hare and birds (Khorsabad)", transports us back to the ancient world of Assyria. Created in 1853 by Austen Henry Layard, this print is a part of his renowned series depicting the monuments of Nineveh. The scene depicted showcases skilled huntsmen engaged in their noble pursuit amidst a lush forest. The hunters are armed with bows and arrows, poised to capture their prey. A magnificent gazelle gracefully leaps through the air as if trying to evade its pursuers, while a nimble hare scurries away from danger. Birds flutter above them all, adding an ethereal touch to the composition. Layard's lithograph not only captures the intensity of the hunt but also provides valuable insights into ancient Assyrian culture and history. It reminds us that King Sennacherib was responsible for constructing Nineveh during his reign from 705-681 BC. Furthermore, it highlights how his grandson Ashurbanipal played a pivotal role in building one of history's most significant libraries within these very walls. With intricate details and masterful execution, this lithograph serves as both an archaeological treasure and a work of art. It allows us to glimpse into Mesopotamian life thousands of years ago – where hunting was not just a means for survival but also an integral part of cultural identity. Displayed at the New York Public Library in the USA, this print continues to captivate viewers with its historical significance and artistic brilliance.
