EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Church of the Holy Name, 1893-94" by Henry Edward Tidmarsh takes us back to a bustling street scene in late 19th century Manchester. The artwork, created with watercolor and gouache on paper, measures 44x32.6 cm and is housed in the prestigious Manchester Art Gallery. The composition showcases a row of buildings on the left side, one of which resembles a square tower that adds architectural charm to the setting. A horse-drawn omnibus can be seen on the right, with its majestic presence evoking nostalgia for a bygone era of transportation. Meanwhile, pedestrians populate both sides of the road - some leisurely strolling along pavements while others daringly cross amidst the lively atmosphere. On closer inspection, we notice intriguing details inscribed on different parts of this artwork. On the back is an inscription that simply reads "Church of the Holy Name" hinting at its subject matter. Additionally, there is another marking stating "No 5". On the front bottom right corner appears an artist's signature - "H. E. T". Finally, we find yet another inscription on the mount saying "The Church of Holy". Through this masterful depiction capturing daily life and historical architecture simultaneously, Tidmarsh transports us to Victorian England where we can almost hear echoes from centuries past. This exceptional piece was acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in 1894 and remains an invaluable part of their collection today.
