XOS5877312 Laban Searching for His Stolen Gods, 1753 (oil on canvas) by Saint-Aubin, Augustin de (1736-1807); 62x72 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: By Augustin de Saint-Aubin
This painting is a sketch for a special competition in 1753 held by the Royal Academy in Paris. The subject of Saint-Aubin's sketch, selected by the academy, comes from the Old Testament book of Genesis. After toiling for Laban for 14 years, Jacob fled with his wife, Rachel, who was also Laban's daughter. Unbeknownst to Jacob, Rachel had stolen her father's idols before their departure to secure her right to her first born. Laban tracks down Jacob and Rachel and accuses them of carrying off his idols. Jacob is still unaware of Rachel's previous actions, and she has hidden the gods under a camel saddle on which she sits.)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This oil on canvas painting, "Laban Searching for His Stolen Gods" by Augustin de Saint-Aubin, transports us back to the 18th century with its intricate details and rich colors. The scene depicted is from the Old Testament book of Genesis, where Laban accuses Jacob and Rachel of stealing his idols after they flee with Rachel's father's daughter. The tension in the painting is palpable as Laban confronts Jacob and Rachel, unaware that Rachel has hidden the stolen gods under a camel saddle she sits upon. The composition skillfully captures the drama of this biblical story, with each figure meticulously rendered to convey their emotions and actions. Saint-Aubin's sketch was created for a competition held by the Royal Academy in Paris in 1753, showcasing his talent as an artist and storyteller. The attention to detail in every aspect of this work – from the figures to the tented background – demonstrates Saint-Aubin's mastery of his craft. As we gaze upon this masterpiece, we are transported into a moment frozen in time, where betrayal and deception hang heavy in the air. It serves as a reminder of both human nature's complexities and timeless themes found within religious texts.
