EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "The Pyed Bird of Paradise" transports us back to the 18th century when George Edwards first created this masterpiece. The print showcases the exquisite artistry and attention to detail that both Edwards and Michael Seligmann possessed. Originally engraved by George Edwards in his renowned works, "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds" and "Gleanings of Natural History" this particular print was re-engraved by Seligmann. Combining Edwards' plates with Catesby's work from "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands". Seligmann added a unique touch by translating names into German while also introducing additional figures and plants not found in the originals. The image itself depicts a stunning bird known as the Pyed Bird of Paradise or Der elsterAahnliche Paradiesvogel. With its long tail adorned with two feathers, it stands out against a backdrop of lush foliage. Every intricate detail is meticulously captured through the delicate lines and vibrant colours used in this engraving. As we admire this piece, we are reminded not only of nature's beauty but also how art can transcend time. This print serves as a testament to the skillful craftsmanship and dedication put forth by these talented artists centuries ago. It continues to inspire awe today, inviting us to appreciate both the wonders of our natural world and human creativity at its finest.
