EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite "Dollshouse of Petronella Oortman" painted by Jacob Appel in 1710. The dollhouse, measuring 87A--69 cm, is a remarkable piece that resides in the prestigious Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Petronella Oortman, a prominent resident of Warmoesstraat in Amsterdam during the Dutch Golden Age, commissioned this dollhouse as a symbol of her status and wealth. Every detail within it was meticulously crafted with expensive miniature items to create an opulent display. The painting beautifully captures the idealized nature of this baby house. Adorned with delicate curtains and filled with intricately designed furniture, each room tells its own story within this miniature world. It offers a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle enjoyed by those fortunate enough to reside during this prosperous era. While time has taken its toll on some aspects of the dollhouse's originality, Appel's artistry immortalizes its grandeur for generations to appreciate. Although many dolls have been lost over time since his painting was completed, their absence does not diminish the allure and historical significance held within these walls. As you gaze upon this image, let your imagination wander through each room and envision yourself stepping into Petronella Oortman's world—a testament to both artistic mastery and societal aspirations from centuries past.
