EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a religious icon produced in Russia between 1750 and 1850. Created by the Russian School of the 18th century, this metal icon is now housed at the National Army Museum in London. The intricate details of this piece are truly remarkable. Painted onto plaster, there are twelve vignettes that depict various scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary. These include significant moments such as the Presentation of the Virgin, the Annunciation, and even Christ's entry into Jerusalem on a donkey. What makes this icon particularly unique is its central image depicting Christ's descent into Limbo. Surrounding it are these beautifully painted vignettes that add depth to its overall narrative. Mounted above an inscription within a heavy gilt frame, this particular icon holds historical significance as well. Lieutenant-Colonel J N Sargent from The East Kent Regiment discovered it in 1855 after Russian forces withdrew from Sevastopol during the Crimean War. With its rich history and exquisite craftsmanship, this religious icon serves as both a symbol of faith and an artistic masterpiece. Its presence evokes a sense of reverence and awe while offering viewers a glimpse into centuries-old traditions and beliefs.
