EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the Brahuis (Baluchis) in Quetta, circa 1898. The image showcases a group of Brahui people, who were predominantly Sunni Muslims residing in Baluchistan, now part of Pakistan. The photographer remains unknown but their work is preserved at the National Army Museum in London. The Brahui people belonged to an ethnic group known for their nomadic herding lifestyle during this period. They resided in tents and temporary camps as they moved across the region. This particular photograph was taken from an album compiled by C A Milward, a member of the 1st Battalion Wiltshire Regiment and 3rd Regiment of Sikh Infantry Punjab Frontier Force between 1897 and 1903. The Brahui language spoken by this community is intriguingly classified as a Dravidian language more commonly found in southern India. Scholars have debated how this enclave emerged within north-western India. Through this image, we are transported back to a time when these proud individuals thrived amidst their traditional culture and society. It serves as both a historical document and an artistic representation that sheds light on the rich diversity present within our world.
