EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the regal presence of King Ludwig III of Bavaria, adorned with his impressive collection of German military medals. The portrait, taken in 1920 by photographer Arthur Traube using the early Uvachrome 3 color process, showcases the monarch in all his glory.
King Ludwig III was the last ruler of Bavaria, reigning from 1913 to 1918. A distinguished military man himself, he served as a lieutenant in the Bavarian army and rose to the rank of Oberleutnant during the Austro-Prussian War. His uniform is impeccably displayed in this image, reflecting his noble status and commitment to his country.
The use of Uvachrome technology adds a unique historical element to this photograph. Invented by Dr. Arthur Traube in 1916 and commercialized from 1922 to 1931, Uvachrome was an early form of color processing that has since become rare and faded over time. Through meticulous color correction, we are able to see King Ludwig III as he would have appeared nearly a century ago.
This portrait serves as a timeless reminder of a bygone era when royalty and nobility held significant power and influence. It is a testament to both the artistry of photography and the grandeur of European history in the early 20th century.
