Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers.
Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "South African Orange Orchards" is part of the series "Summer's Oranges from South Africa" by Guy Kortright. The vibrant colors and intricate details of this colour litho bring to life the beauty and abundance of orange orchards in South Africa. Commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board, this artwork was printed by Waterlow & Sons Ltd for HMSO. It is now housed at Manchester Art Gallery in the UK, which boasts a remarkable collection of artist-designed posters commissioned by the British government between 1926 and 1933. The Empire Marketing Board aimed to promote sales of goods produced within the British Empire across Great Britain, its Dominions, and Colonies. This particular poster campaign sought to instill an Empire-conscious consumer mindset among Britons. Manchester Art Gallery acquired over 200 posters from this era during the 1930s. These powerful images depict various aspects of life within the empire, showcasing its people, places, and products. However, viewed through a contemporary lens, these posters also raise uncomfortable questions about the legacies left behind by colonialism. The inclusion of this print in Manchester Art Gallery's collection offers viewers a chance to reflect on both the artistic merit and historical context surrounding such works. As we appreciate Kortright's skillful portrayal of South African orange orchards, we are reminded that art has an important role in exploring complex narratives and challenging our understanding of history.
