EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the first rescue attempt following the tragic sinking of the ship "Russia" in 1901. The passengers, stranded and desperate for help, would soon find salvation in an unexpected form - a train that would arrive to their aid four days later. The engraving, featured in "Le Petit Parisien" on January 27th, 1901, showcases the skilled work of F. L Meaulle and Carrey. It is now part of a private collection curated by Stefano Bianchetti. In this image from the early twentieth century, we see a scene filled with tension and hope. A tugboat battles against rough waves as it approaches the distressed passengers clinging onto debris from their sunken vessel. The colors used in this engraving bring life to the chaos unfolding before our eyes - vibrant hues representing both danger and resilience. This artwork serves as a reminder of humanity's ability to come together during times of crisis. Despite being faced with such adversity at sea, these individuals were fortunate enough to be saved by an unconventional means of transportation - a train arriving just in time. As we gaze upon this historical moment frozen in time through Stefano Bianchetti's lens, we are reminded not only of past tragedies but also of our capacity for compassion and ingenuity when faced with adversity.
