7215222 SADKO IN THE UNDERWATER KINGDOM (detail), 1876 (oil on canvas) by Repin, Ilya Efimovich (1844-1930); State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia; (add.info.: 1876//Oil on canvas
In Paris, in 1873, Repine began this work inspired by a traditional Russian poem. It depicts the story of Sadko, a wealthy Novgorod merchant, who falls into the underwater kingdom of the sea tsar; invited to choose between several fiancees, he elects Chernavushka, the Russian girl. Repine worked on this painting for three years, without being satisfied with it. He felt that this fantastic theme, treated with precious details and refined colors, would not be in line with his ambition as a realistic painter. Nevertheless, the artist presented Sadko to the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg on his return in 1876 and received, thanks to this work so foreign to the rest of his production, the title of academician.); Photo © Sylvain Collet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing detail from Ilya Efimovich Repin's renowned painting, "Sadko in the Underwater Kingdom". Created in 1876 using oil on canvas, this masterpiece is housed at the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. Repin embarked on this artistic endeavor while residing in Paris in 1873. Inspired by a traditional Russian poem, he delved into depicting the enchanting tale of Sadko, a wealthy merchant from Novgorod who finds himself submerged within the underwater kingdom of the sea tsar. In this particular scene captured by Sylvain Collet's lens, we witness Sadko faced with an important decision as he is presented with several potential suitors. Ultimately, his heart leads him to choose Chernavushka, a beautiful Russian girl. Despite Repin's initial dissatisfaction with this fantastical theme and its departure from his realistic style as an artist, he dedicated three years to perfecting every intricate detail and refining each color palette within this painting. Upon presenting "Sadko" to the Academy of Fine Arts upon his return to St. Petersburg in 1876, Repin was awarded the prestigious title of academician for his exceptional work that stood apart from his usual repertoire. Bridgeman Images has expertly immortalized this momentous artwork through their high-quality print reproduction technique without compromising any commercial use rights associated with it.
