Translation: City Soldiers at the Gate. Until the founding of the German Customs Union in 1834, the many national borders in Germany required a customs duty each time you crossed them. There was also a check at every city gate. The identity papers of the travellers, origin, purpose of the journey were carefully checked by the city soldiers stationed in front of the gate before the entrance to the city was released. EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant colour lithograph captures a scene from the past, depicting Stadtsoldaten Am Tor or City Soldiers at the Gate in 19th century Germany. Before the establishment of the German Customs Union in 1834, crossing national borders within Germany required paying a customs duty each time. This print shows city soldiers stationed at a gate, meticulously checking the identity papers and purpose of travel for each individual before allowing them entry into the city. The attention to detail in this artwork is remarkable, with every figure and architectural element carefully rendered by the anonymous German School artist. The uniforms of the soldiers, the bustling activity around them, and even small details like signage on buildings all contribute to creating a vivid historical scene. This illustration was originally created for Deutsche Kulturbilder (German Cultural Images) in 1934, showcasing scenes from German history between 1400-1900. It offers viewers a glimpse into daily life and customs during this period, shedding light on how strict border controls were once enforced. Overall, this print serves as both an artistic representation and historical documentation of a bygone era when city gates were not just entrances but also checkpoints controlled by vigilant city soldiers ensuring safety and order within their walls.
