EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print captures Lady Louisa Lennox with her husband's regiment, the 25th Regiment of Foot, in a moment frozen in time. Painted by Giuseppe Chiesa around 1771, this oil on canvas masterpiece showcases the elegance and strength of Lady Louisa as she stands beside Lord George Lennox. The backdrop of Fort St Philip in Port Mahon adds an air of grandeur to the scene. During this period, the 25th Regiment of Foot was stationed in Menorca from June 1769 until 1775. They were one among several regiments tasked with maintaining British control over this vital Mediterranean base that had been regained from Spain after the Seven Years War. The fortifications guarding Port Mahon's main harbor can be seen majestically standing tall behind Lady Louisa and her husband's regiment. This set of six unsigned paintings attributed to Giuseppe Chiesa originally belonged to Lord George Lennox himself. As colonel of the regiment from 1762 until his death in 1805, he held a deep connection to these artworks depicting their service in Menorca. Now housed at London's National Army Museum, this particular print offers viewers a glimpse into history through its intricate details and masterful brushstrokes. It serves as a testament to both love and duty as Lady Louisa proudly stands alongside her husband's comrades-in-arms against an awe-inspiring backdrop that symbolizes British power and control during that era.
