5929999 Flintlock musket, Thoresby Volunteers, Nottinghamshire, c.1803 (musket, flintlock) by English School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Flintlock musket, Thoresby Volunteers, Nottinghamshire, 1803 (c).
Made by Knubley of London, 1803 (c).
Known as a Knubley musket, this is a civilian weapon based on a standard government pattern. Standarisation allowed bayonets to be supplied from a different maker. So while the gun was made in London, its bayonet came from Birmingham.
The Thoresby Volunteers were raised in 1803. The unit was commanded by Herbert Pierrepoint, a man of immense wealth and great influence in the locality. The unit was raised not only to counteract any threat of invasion but also to protect the Pierrepoint estate against aggression and looting resulting from the civil disturbances prevailing at the time.); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

This print showcases a Flintlock musket, belonging to the Thoresby Volunteers in Nottinghamshire, circa 1803. Crafted by Knubley of London, this civilian weapon adheres to a standard government pattern. Interestingly, its bayonet was sourced from Birmingham due to the convenience of standardized production. The Thoresby Volunteers were established in response to potential invasion threats and civil unrest during that era. Led by Herbert Pierrepoint, a man of immense wealth and influence in the region, this unit served not only as a defense force but also as protectors of the Pierrepoint estate against aggression and looting. The image captures the essence of historical significance and craftsmanship embodied within this flintlock musket. Its intricate design represents an era when firearms were meticulously handcrafted with precision and attention to detail. The photograph allows us to appreciate both the beauty and functionality of this remarkable piece. Preserved at the National Army Museum in London, this artifact serves as a testament to England's rich military history. It stands as a reminder of how communities came together during times of uncertainty to safeguard their homes and estates while contributing towards national security. Through Bridgeman Images' lens, we are transported back in time, enabling us to admire not just an exquisite firearm but also gain insight into the social dynamics and challenges faced by society over two centuries ago.
