Cowgate, 1829 (pencil & w / c on paper)

1214470 Cowgate, 1829 (pencil & w/c on paper) by English School, (19th century); 15.0 x17.1 cm; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK; (add.info.: Cowgate got its name because it was used as a route to drive cattle up from the quayside. This avoided the steep and dangerous route of the Side. (In 1787, Dean Street was built from half-way up the Side, but the lower part was still very congested.) Cowgate led from Broad Chare, on the quayside, to Pilgrim Street. All Saints Church is in the background of this view.); eTyne & Wear Archives & Museums; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Cowgate, 1829" takes us back in time to the bustling streets of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the 19th century. The artwork, created by an anonymous English School artist, showcases a picturesque scene filled with architectural beauty and historical significance. The Cowgate street derives its name from its original purpose as a route for driving cattle up from the quayside. This alternative path was chosen to avoid the steep and perilous Side route. Even though Dean Street was constructed in 1787 to alleviate congestion, Cowgate remained an essential thoroughfare connecting Broad Chare on the quayside to Pilgrim Street. In this particular view, we are treated to a glimpse of All Saints Church standing tall in the background. Its majestic presence adds a touch of grandeur and spirituality to this lively street scene. The pencil and watercolor technique used by the artist beautifully captures every intricate detail of the architecture and brings life to this historic moment frozen in time. As we admire this remarkable piece, we can't help but appreciate how it offers us a window into Newcastle's past—a city that has evolved over centuries while still preserving its rich heritage. Thanks to Bridgeman Images' preservation efforts, we can now cherish this extraordinary artwork that encapsulates both artistic talent and cultural significance.
