EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant and captivating print titled "Buy Australian Fruit" by Henry Bassett is a striking representation of the Empire Marketing Board's poster campaign in the 1920s. Commissioned by the British government, this colour lithograph was intended to promote sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods across Great Britain, its Dominions, and Colonies. Displayed at Manchester Art Gallery, this artwork forms part of their remarkable collection of artist-designed posters from that era. The gallery acquired over 200 posters during the 1930s, showcasing powerful images that depict various aspects of the Empire's people, places, and products. However, viewing these posters through a contemporary lens raises important questions about the legacies of the Empire today. While they undoubtedly possess artistic merit and historical significance, some may find discomfort in acknowledging the beliefs they represent. In this particular print, Bassett skillfully captures attention with his use of bold colors and intricate details. The image encourages viewers to support Australian fruit production while simultaneously evoking nostalgia for an era when such campaigns were prevalent. As we admire this piece from Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder collection at Manchester Art Gallery, let us reflect on how it serves as both a testament to history and a reminder to critically examine our relationship with colonialism's lasting impact.
