1215767 Wreck off the South Pier 1861 (oil on canvas) by Scott, John (1802-82); 146.8x93.2 cm; South Shields Museum & Art Gallery, South Shields, UK; (add.info.: Scott, John
In the early morning of February 9th 1861, the brig Minerva (from Whitby) was blown by a storm onto rocks off the South Pier at Tynemouth. The lifeboats Providence (shown here) and Tyne used rocket equipment to rescue five crewmen, but two were drowned when the ship broke up. One of the crew is clinging the last few feet of the ships mast on the right of the picture. The South Pier at Tynemouth is partly built in the background of the scene (it was completed in 1895).); eTyne & Wear Archives & Museums; French, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Wreck off the South Pier 1861" by John Scott tells a harrowing tale of a maritime disaster that occurred on February 9th, 1861. The painting depicts the tragic fate of the brig Minerva from Whitby as it was mercilessly battered by a storm and forced onto rocks near the South Pier at Tynemouth. In this dramatic scene, we witness the valiant efforts of two lifeboats, Providence and Tyne, as they employ rocket equipment to rescue five crewmen from certain death. However, despite their heroic endeavors, two unfortunate souls succumbed to the treacherous sea when the ship ultimately broke apart. The artist's attention to detail is evident in every brushstroke; he captures both the chaos and desperation that unfolded during those fateful moments. One particularly poignant image shows a lone crew member clinging desperately to what remains of the ship's mast on the right side of the picture. Notably, Scott also includes a glimpse of historical significance within his composition—the partially constructed South Pier at Tynemouth can be seen in the background. It serves as a reminder that this landmark structure was completed several decades after this devastating event took place. Through this remarkable artwork, viewers are transported back in time to bear witness to an extraordinary act of bravery amidst tragedy—a testament to humanity's unwavering spirit even in times of great peril.
