> London: Thames & Canal Scenes
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the bustling streets of Old London Bridge, circa 1630. Painted by Claude de Jongh, this oil masterpiece captures the essence of medieval vernacular architecture and transports us to a bygone era. In this scene, we see the iconic Tower of London standing proudly on the left side, while a drawbridge spans across the middle gap. Our eyes are drawn towards Nonesuch House, an architectural gem built between 1577-79. To the right of the drawbridge lies Southwark Gate with its haunting display of traitors' heads. The river Thames flows gracefully beneath Old London Bridge, dotted with various vessels that bring life and movement to this historic painting. Barges, boats, tugboats, and passenger boats navigate through its waters as rowers make their way along its banks. Notable landmarks such as St Olaves Church and St Magnus's Church can be spotted in the distance on either side of this magnificent bridge. Tudor-style houses line up along both sides of the bridge while a jetty extends into the river on far right. Although demolished in 1831 to make way for a new structure, this painting allows us to marvel at Old London Bridge's grandeur and significance in history. It serves as a testament to our ever-changing world while preserving moments frozen in time like precious treasures from centuries past.
