EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Old Buildings, Union Street and Corn Exchange before Town Hall was Built" by John Storey takes us back in time to the bustling streets of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Painted in 1881 from a sketch made in 1854, this artwork offers a glimpse into the city's rich history. In the foreground, we see Union Street adorned with old buildings and pedestrians going about their daily lives. The center shop, Blenkinsop Cooper, stands out as a barrel-maker's shop, adding character to the scene. Towering behind these structures is the magnificent Corn Exchange designed by renowned architects John and Benjamin Green. Construction on this architectural gem began in 1838 and it later became part of the Town Hall built between 1858-63. The image also captures St Nicholas Cathedral with its impressive spire rising above the city skyline. Its presence adds an air of grandeur to this vibrant street scene. As we admire this snapshot from over a century ago, it is fascinating to note that many of these historic buildings no longer stand today due to demolition efforts in the 1970s. John Storey was a talented artist known for his watercolor depictions of buildings and urban landscapes. His attention to detail brings life to every brushstroke within this composition. Through this remarkable artwork, we are transported back in time, allowing us to appreciate both Newcastle's architectural heritage and Storey's artistic prowess.
