3660856 St John the Baptist, detail of 3660852, 1526-30 (fresco) by Correggio, (Antonio Allegri) (c.1489-1534); Duomo, Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, Parma, Emilia-Romagna, Italy; (add.info.: Protector saints of Parma: St. John the Baptist with the lamb, St. Hilary with a yellow mantle, St. Thomas (or Joseph) with an angel carrying the martyrdom palm leaf, and St. Bernard, the sole figure looking upwards.
Below the feet of Jesus, the uncorrupt Virgin in red and blue robes is lofted upward by a vortex of singing or otherwise musical angels. Ringing the base of the dome, between the windows, stand the perplexed Apostles, as if standing around the empty tomb in which they have just placed her. In the group of the blessed can be seen: Adam and Eve, Judith with the head of Holofernes. At the centre of the dome is a foreshortened beardless Jesus descending to meet his mother.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing detail of the fresco "St John the Baptist" by Correggio, located in the Duomo, Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta in Parma, Italy. The artwork is part of a larger composition depicting various protector saints of Parma and biblical figures. In this particular section, we see St. John the Baptist with a lamb, symbolizing his role as the precursor to Jesus Christ. Surrounding him are other saintly figures such as St. Hilary and St. Thomas (or Joseph), each carrying their own distinctive attributes. Beneath them lies an enchanting scene where the uncorrupt Virgin Mary is being lifted up by a swirling vortex of angelic beings singing or playing musical instruments. This celestial display emphasizes her assumption into heaven. The dome itself is adorned with perplexed Apostles standing around an empty tomb, reminiscent of when they laid Mary to rest before her glorious ascension. At the center of it all is a foreshortened depiction of Jesus descending from above to meet his mother, adding another layer of divine significance to this breathtaking masterpiece. Antonio Allegri's skillful brushwork and attention to detail bring this religious narrative to life on the cathedral's cupola, leaving viewers awe-inspired by its beauty and spiritual depth.
