5920258 16th Lancers, Battle of Aliwal, 28 January 1846 (w/c) by Hayes, Michael Angelo (1820-77); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: 16th Lancers, Battle of Aliwal, 28 January 1846.
Watercolour by Michael Angelo Hayes (1820-1877), 1850 circa.
The battle was fought during the 1st Sikh War (1845-1846) between a force of 10, 000 British and Indian troops under the command of General Sir Harry Smith and a 15, 0000 strong Sikh army led by Ranjur Singh. The Sikh forces occupied an entrenched position between the villages of Aliwal and Bhundri, close to the River Sutlej. Smith drove the Sikhs out of Aliwal with his infantry and then rolled up their line with cavalry and artillery support. The 16th Lancers charged several times during the action, breaking a number of Sikh infantry squares and overrunning a battery of Sikh artillery. The lancers are shown wearing over their chapkas the white cotton cover which had been adopted for service in the tropics.); eNational Army Museum; Irish, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "16th Lancers, Battle of Aliwal, 28 January 1846" captures a significant moment in history during the 1st Sikh War. Painted by Michael Angelo Hayes around 1850, this watercolor artwork showcases the bravery and valor of the British and Indian troops led by General Sir Harry Smith. In this intense battle scene, we witness the clash between a force of 10,000 British and Indian soldiers against a formidable Sikh army numbering at least 15,000. The Sikhs had taken up an entrenched position near the River Sutlej between Aliwal and Bhundri villages. With strategic precision, General Smith's infantry successfully pushed back the Sikhs from their stronghold in Aliwal. Supported by cavalry charges and artillery fire, it was the heroic actions of the renowned 16th Lancers that turned the tide of battle. Charging multiple times with unwavering determination, they shattered several Sikh infantry squares and even overran enemy artillery positions. Notably depicted in this painting are the lancers wearing white cotton covers over their chapkas - a practical adaptation for service in tropical conditions. This detail adds to our understanding of how these brave soldiers adapted to their environment while fighting on foreign soil. This image serves as a testament to both military strategy and individual acts of courage displayed during one of history's most pivotal conflicts.
