EDITORS COMMENTS
The caption for the print of "Louis de Rougemont, French hoaxer (litho)" could be: This satirical lithograph depicts Louis de Rougemont, a notorious French hoaxer from the early twentieth century. Created by Phil May in 1929 for J B Booth's book "London Town" this illustration captures the essence of Rougemont's fraudulent escapades. Born Henri Louis Grin in 1847, Rougemont gained fame through his outlandish tales of adventure and survival. He claimed to have spent years living among indigenous tribes in Australia and surviving encounters with crocodiles and other dangerous wildlife. However, it was later revealed that most of his stories were fabricated. In this caricature-like drawing, we see a crowded scene depicting a group of people surrounding Rougemont as he captivates them with his tall tales. The artist cleverly portrays him as a cheat and fraudster, highlighting the skepticism surrounding his claims. Rougemont's audacious fabrications captured public imagination at the time but ultimately led to his downfall when exposed as a fraud. This lithograph serves as both a historical record and an amusing commentary on human gullibility. Bridgeman Images holds this artwork in their private collection, preserving an important piece of history that reminds us to question extraordinary claims before accepting them at face value.
