Crucifix with Three Angels and the Symbols of the Evangelists, c

883739 Crucifix with Three Angels and the Symbols of the Evangelists, c.1470-80 (hand-coloured woodcut with red, green, yellow, and light & dark brown) by Firabet of Rapperswil (fl. c.1465-80); 39.2x24.8 cm; Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MN, USA; (add.info.: Early devotional woodcuts are very rare today because, ironically, they were such a common part of fifteenth-century life. Available by the thousands from peddlers or monastics and at shrines and fairs, these images were carried around, tacked up for use as home altars, sewn into clothing, and prayed to in the belief that they had intercessory powers. Eventually most simply wore out. The few that survive were typically pasted into book covers as special decorations. Only two impressions of the present image are known today. This print is among the earliest to bear both the name of the artisan or publisher and his address--the town of Rapperswil in Switzerland.); eMinneapolis Institute of Art; Bequest of Herschel V. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the "Crucifix with Three Angels and the Symbols of the Evangelists" created by Firabet of Rapperswil in the late 15th century. Hand-coloured with vibrant red, green, yellow, and light & dark brown hues, this woodcut measures 39.2x24.8 cm and is currently housed at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in Minnesota. Early devotional woodcuts like this one are exceedingly rare today due to their widespread use during the fifteenth century. Despite their commonality at that time, these images were cherished as objects of devotion and believed to possess intercessory powers. They could be found in thousands from peddlers or monastics, as well as at shrines and fairs. People would carry them around, hang them up as home altars, sew them into clothing, and offer prayers before them. Most of these prints eventually wore out over time; however, a few survived by being carefully pasted into book covers for special decoration purposes. The present image is particularly significant because it bears both the name of its artisan or publisher and his address - Rapperswil in Switzerland. Only two impressions of this remarkable print are known to exist today, making it an incredibly valuable piece of art history. This print allows us to appreciate not only its artistic beauty but also its historical significance as a testament to religious devotion during the fifteenth century.
