A Brixham trawler running into Torbay, early 19th century (oil painting)

7337767 A Brixham trawler running into Torbay, early 19th century (oil painting) by Luny, Thomas (1759-1837); 86.4x142.3 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Thomas Luny
A dramatic painting off Torbay in Devon during a storm. A Brixham trawler, with its distinctive red sail is shown in the centre of the painting making its way towards land in a heavy sea. The figures of the sailors are clearly visible on the steeply angled deck. Lightning over the headland in the distance stands out in front of the black storm clouds above. The sky lightens closest to the port. Riding out the storm and anchored in the clearer weather is a frigate shown broadside to port and flying the red ensign. Another ship is anchored close by partly obscured by the trawler. Brixham was the Devon fishing port which was home to one of the world's largest fleets of wooden sailing trawlers. These elegant boats with their distinctive sails were first built in Brixham in the 19th century. The artist came to live in South Devon, at Teignmouth in about 1807, where such a scene would have become very familiar to him. During his time in Devon he is known to have produced over 2,000 paintings. The painting is signed by the artist.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning oil painting by Thomas Luny captures the raw power and beauty of a Brixham trawler running into Torbay during the early 19th century. The scene is set amidst a raging storm, with dark storm clouds looming overhead and lightning striking in the distance. The red sail of the trawler stands out against the tumultuous sea, as brave sailors can be seen on deck navigating through the rough waters. In the background, a frigate is anchored in clearer weather, flying the red ensign proudly. Another ship is also visible nearby, adding to the sense of chaos and danger in this dramatic maritime scene. Brixham was known for its fishing fleet of wooden sailing trawlers, and Luny expertly captures their elegance and strength in this painting. Having lived in South Devon himself, Luny would have been familiar with scenes like this one, which inspired him to create over 2,000 paintings during his time there. His attention to detail and skillful use of light and shadow make this painting truly come alive. This print from the National Maritime Museum is a testament to both Luny's talent as an artist and the enduring legacy of Brixham's seafaring history. It serves as a reminder of the bravery and resilience of sailors who faced such treacherous conditions at sea.
